Hi all!

can anyone tell me what are the basic skills required for a group discussion? I have never done a group discussion before.

Any tips?

Hi Rucha!

Your query is very valid indeed as group discussions are a method of evaluation in almost all B schools. Here are a few tips you might find useful -

> Participate in the discussion!
> Spending a little time analyzing the topic may provide you with insights which others may not have thought about. Use a pen and paper to jot down your ideas.
> It is very important to listen and understand the topic before you air your opinions.
> Your personality is also being evaluated. Your verbal and non verbal cues are being read.
> Look at your group members while talking. Remember, you are the participant in the GD; not the evaluator.
> Your confidence level is being evaluated. Decent communication skills with good confidence is a must to crack the GDs.
> Assessment is not only on your communication skills but also on your ability to be a team player.
> Evaluation is based on quality, and not on quantity. Your contribution must be relevant.
>The mantra is "Contributing meaningfully to the team's success."
> Domination is frowned upon.
> Your analysis and interpretation are important, backing them up with facts and figures helps!
> Its a good idea to attend a few mock GDs.

So just keep these few things in mind, brush up on your general knowledge and GDs wont be a problem!!

Hi,

GDs are not very difficult to handle.. infact it is similar to a chat you generally have in a group of friends.. there too it is the knowledge that plays an vital role.. Suppose you guys are discussing about the best film release in past week.. you wont be able to comment unless you saw it or read it's review..

So GDs in coll are no different; the only thing is that you need to be more formal in approach...

& the final mantra to become successful in GDs is PRACTICE!!!!!

If you are in Mumbai you can join a workshop which will help you master GD techniques..
